Vitalik’s Test of AI’s Ability to Pierce Online Anonymity Deemed a Failure After 13 Days

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has long participated in protocol governance and technical discussions through public writings. By deliberately publishing a document anonymously, he has turned authorship identification into an experiment. The challenge tests whether large language models can sift through the noise of hundreds of Ethereum files and identify an author by word choice, sentence structure and patterns of argument, while highlighting how AI could erode online anonymity.

Buterin recently issued a public challenge to the AI community to use writing-style analysis to identify an Ethereum document he published anonymously in early 2026 from among hundreds of candidate files. No prize or deadline has been announced. For now, the experiment is focused on observing how well models can identify authors in large bodies of text and assessing the practical barriers to tracing anonymous writers.

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin believes the community should redesign the application layer while preserving core principles such as decentralization, openness and censorship resistance. He is exploring combinations of AI agents, zero-knowledge proofs, or ZK, and prediction markets that could reshape how wallets, DeFi, stable assets and oracles operate.

As of July 19, 2026, Buterin had outlined three directions: replacing traditional wallets with AI agents, using ZK to protect API calls and user behavior, and turning DeFi into a general-purpose futures market. He also envisioned using AI, prediction markets and large language models to create customized stable assets and strengthen decentralized oracles. The proposals remain conceptual, with no implementation date or investment amount disclosed.
