OpenAI Plans Phased GPT-5.6 Release, Develops Custom AI Chip With Broadcom
OpenAI plans to strengthen agent collaboration and add a “max” reasoning tier with GPT-5.6. It is also developing Jalapeño, its first custom AI chip, with Broadcom. The moves are intended to reduce reliance on outside chip suppliers and create a competitive strategy spanning both models and computing hardware. No investment amount has been disclosed.
As of July 19, 2026, GPT-5.6 was set to be made available first to selected partners for testing, followed by a phased wider release. Reports said the arrangement was a response to the Trump administration’s requirement that quality, safety and the eligibility of early customers be reviewed individually. OpenAI has not announced a date for full availability, while Jalapeño’s specifications and mass-production timetable also remain undisclosed.
