Japan Links Rapidus 2-Nanometer Chips to Sovereign AI and Robotics
Japan is tying semiconductor self-sufficiency to sovereign AI and robotics as it seeks to regain ground in advanced manufacturing and reduce its exposure to foreign technology. The strategy puts Rapidus Corp.’s planned 2-nanometer logic chips beneath domestically controlled AI models and “physical AI” systems that enable robots and machines to act. Tokyo sees the combination as a way to leverage Japan’s precision-manufacturing base while addressing a shrinking workforce in its rapidly aging society.
The government stepped up implementation on June 5, 2026, investing an additional 150 billion yen in Rapidus through the Information-technology Promotion Agency, Japan, taking state equity funding to 250 billion yen. Rapidus is targeting mass production in 2027. On June 30, the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization selected Noetra Corp. and the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology for FRONTia, a program running through fiscal 2030 to develop a homegrown multimodal foundation model for AI robots and physical-AI applications.
