M5 Mac Ultra Struggles to Replace Claude and ChatGPT Subscriptions

1 reports · First detected 2026-08-26 · Last active 2026-08-26

Running an open-source large language model locally can keep sensitive data on a user’s own machine and reduce dependence on internet access or outside providers. That has made high-end Apple hardware an appealing alternative to recurring subscriptions from Anthropic’s Claude and OpenAI’s ChatGPT. The comparison, however, must account for the computer’s upfront price, electricity and maintenance alongside the cloud services’ continuing model upgrades and managed infrastructure.

A recent analysis of an M5-equipped Mac Ultra found that its three-year ownership cost may not undercut Claude and ChatGPT subscriptions, though the report did not provide a single universally applicable savings figure. Local open-source models also continued to trail leading cloud systems such as Claude Opus in practical tasks including coding assistance. Buying the machine therefore is unlikely to eliminate cloud AI fees unless users have strict privacy, data-sovereignty or offline-computing requirements.
