EU Opens Bidding for Seven AI Gigafactories in €30 Billion Push

The European Union is developing AI Gigafactories to narrow Europe’s computing-power gap with the United States and China. The large-scale facilities will combine high-performance computing and data centers, with at least 100,000 advanced AI chips at each site, giving European companies and researchers capacity to train next-generation models. Brussels also sees the infrastructure as central to technological sovereignty and reduced reliance on foreign providers.

The European Commission opened bidding on July 30, 2026, for as many as seven AI Gigafactories across Europe, targeting total investment of more than €30 billion. About €10 billion will come from public financing, which the Commission expects to attract at least €20 billion in private capital. The first facilities are intended to become operational by mid-2028.
