Indiana Passes Bill Allowing Bitcoin Options in Public Retirement Plans
The Indiana Public Retirement System (INPRS) manages about $54.9 billion in assets and serves more than 553,000 members. HB 1042 marks the first time cryptocurrency has been included among self-directed investment options in state-administered retirement and savings plans. It does not authorize the state government to invest the entire pension fund directly in Bitcoin.
Governor Mike Braun signed HB 1042 on March 3, 2026. The law requires defined-contribution plans, Hoosier START, and retirement accounts for public employees and teachers to offer at least one cryptocurrency investment option by July 1, 2027. Braun also signed HEA 1116, imposing a blanket ban on the operation of about 800 cryptocurrency ATMs to reduce fraud risks.
