Uphold Launches Fractional Trading for 4,000-Plus U.S. Stocks, ETFs
Fractional-share trading has become a key tool for brokers seeking to lower the cost of access to high-priced U.S. equities and broaden retail portfolio diversification. Uphold, a digital-asset platform serving customers in more than 140 countries, is extending that model by placing stocks, exchange-traded funds and crypto assets in one app. The move underscores growing competition among crypto platforms to retain customer funds by combining traditional securities with digital-asset trading.
Uphold launched the service for U.S. customers on July 21, 2026, offering more than 4,000 U.S. stocks and ETFs, with eligible fractional-share orders starting at $5 and no Uphold commission. Users can sell Bitcoin and buy Berkshire Hathaway shares in a single app-based step, though the crypto is first converted into U.S. dollars. Securities are offered through Uphold Securities Inc., with accounts carried by Apex Clearing Corp. Uphold said it plans to expand access to 24 hours a day, five days a week.
