SEGA and Nvidia Mark 30 Years Since Lifesaving Deal
Nvidia faced collapse in 1996 after betting on the wrong technology during a low point in its early years. Partner SEGA stepped in, converting payments under an existing development contract into an equity investment that provided Nvidia with a crucial $5 million lifeline. The funding helped Nvidia survive the threat of bankruptcy and laid the foundation for its eventual rise as a global powerhouse in AI chips and computing, turning the rescue into a legendary story in the technology industry.
To mark the 30th anniversary of their partnership, Nvidia Chief Executive Jensen Huang traveled to Japan in July 2026 for a celebration and publicly thanked SEGA for its support. Three decades later, SEGA's early recognition of Nvidia's talent helped enable the chipmaker's rise to a market value of several trillion dollars. Huang's visit both honored that lifesaving assistance and signaled that the two companies would continue deepening their partnership in the new AI era.
