World Cup Showcases Latest Digital Payment Technology
The World Cup brings together international travelers and generates concentrated consumer spending, making it an important testing ground for payment companies such as Visa to trial contactless payments and wearable payment devices. Companies use purchases of food, transportation and merchandise during the tournament to lower barriers to cashless payments, hoping to turn short-term experimentation into lasting payment habits.
A recent report titled “How the World Cup showcases payment tech” said payment companies are using World Cup crowds to demonstrate new payment products, with a focus on contactless cards and wearable devices. However, the available event data does not specify the tournament year or publication date, nor does it provide figures for transaction values, investment or adoption rates.
