Microsoft Tightens Identity Controls as Enterprise AI Agents Expand

Microsoft is expanding AI agents across a wider range of knowledge-work functions, recasting employees from task executors into supervisors who set objectives and review automated output. The shift could increase workplace productivity, but autonomous agents that access corporate data and systems also create new security and accountability challenges, making identity governance and permission controls essential for deployment at scale.

Microsoft 365 Copilot has surpassed 30 million paid seats, underscoring the growing enterprise footprint of the company’s AI products. Microsoft said all agents newly created in Copilot Studio from July 2026 must be tied to Entra Agent IDs, bringing them under a formal identity framework. The requirement is designed to help companies manage access, trace activity and reduce security risks as automated workflows become more autonomous.
