OpenAI launched ChatGPT in November 2022, after which the generative AI race expanded from model capabilities to consumer access and capital markets. The mobile app’s more than 1 billion monthly active users put it close to the scale of mainstream platforms, while Anthropic’s Claude is rapidly catching up. Sensor Tower estimates that ChatGPT’s mobile app surpassed 1 billion monthly active users worldwide in May 2026, reaching the milestone roughly three years after its launch. Over the same period, Claude’s user base grew about 640% year on year, compared with 62% for ChatGPT. Anthropic confidentially submitted a draft S-1 registration statement to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission on June 1, followed by OpenAI on June 8. Neither company disclosed the number of shares to be offered, the amount it plans to raise or a listing date.
