AI-agent developers must balance reasoning quality, latency and inference costs, a particularly acute trade-off for cash-conscious startups trying to move from prototypes into production. OpenAI’s GPT-5.6 family addresses that problem with three tiers: Sol for frontier capability, Terra for a balance of intelligence and cost, and Luna for high-volume, cost-sensitive work. The lineup lets companies route requests by task complexity instead of defaulting every workload to the most expensive model.

As of Aug. 14, 2026, OpenAI recommends the Responses API for reasoning, tool use and multi-turn workflows, alongside new capabilities including Programmatic Tool Calling, multi-agent beta, persisted reasoning and explicit prompt caching. Prices per 1 million input and output tokens are $5 and $30 for GPT-5.6 Sol, $2.50 and $15 for Terra, and $1 and $6 for Luna. All three models offer a 1.05-million-token context window and up to 128,000 output tokens, giving startups clear cost and capacity choices.
