Bank of Maldives Picks Finastra Essence for Core Banking Overhaul
Bank of Maldives, founded in 1982, is the country’s largest bank by assets and branch presence, serving more than 390,000 customers through branches, self-service centers, ATMs and digital channels. Modernizing its core infrastructure is significant because the system underpins product development, transaction processing and customer service across the archipelago, including both conventional and Islamic banking products.
Finastra said on July 21, 2026, that BML had selected its next-generation Essence platform as the foundation of the bank’s long-term digital transformation. The implementation is expected to speed the launch of products and services while streamlining operations through greater automation and straight-through processing. The companies did not disclose the contract value, implementation cost or target date for completing the migration.

The history behind this eventBanks Recast Core Modernisation as Strategic Overhaul
Core banking systems underpin deposits, lending, payments and account processing, but decades-old architectures can slow product launches and complicate data integration. As digital finance raises expectations for faster, more flexible services, modernisation is shifting beyond a straightforward technology migration. Banks increasingly view the work as a broader strategic overhaul involving operating models, organisational capabilities, architecture choices and the sequencing of long-term investment.
The latest industry discussion suggests the central question has moved from whether banks should modernise to how they can execute the transition in manageable stages. Institutions are weighing full replacement, incremental decomposition and coexistence between legacy and newer platforms, with agility, resilience and migration risk shaping decisions. The cited report does not identify a specific bank, investment amount or implementation date, but points to a sector-wide reassessment of upgrade paths.
Flagstar Bank Taps Fiserv’s Finxact for Core Overhaul
Flagstar Bank has selected Finxact, Fiserv’s cloud-native core banking platform, as the foundation of a broader technology modernization program. Core systems support account records, transaction processing and product management, making the upgrade central to the regional bank’s ability to launch digital services faster, streamline operations and reduce constraints associated with legacy infrastructure.
The bank plans a phased migration to Finxact, an approach designed to limit operational disruption while gradually moving critical workloads onto the new platform. Flagstar and Fiserv did not disclose the contract value, a start date for individual migration stages or a target date for completing the transition. Execution milestones will therefore be a key measure of whether the project delivers the expected gains in digital capability and efficiency.
