OpenAI Halts New Pro Subscriptions as GPT-6 Astra Demand Surges

OpenAI has positioned GPT-6 Astra as its latest flagship model and a “generational leap,” raising expectations for advances in capability, safety and commercial applications. The launch is also a test of the company’s ability to manage surging demand while delivering access fairly to paying ChatGPT subscribers, approved institutions and businesses that rely on its application programming interface.

As of Sept. 4, 2026, GPT-6 Astra was available only to a small group of institutions that had applied for early access, with OpenAI planning a broader rollout to all paying users and API partners within days. Chief Executive Sam Altman apologized for the “messy” release. Eligible subscribers locked out of the model will receive one stackable usage-limit reset for each day of delay; OpenAI announced no cash refund or dollar-valued compensation.

OpenAI’s GPT-6 Astra is positioned as a new generation of work-focused artificial intelligence, designed not only to generate content but also to operate computers and complete complex tasks across software applications. Its 1.05 million-token context window can accommodate extensive documents, operational histories and long-running workflows, potentially expanding the scope of enterprise automation, research and autonomous AI agents.

OpenAI has formally introduced GPT-6 Astra with improved retrieval of notes from long contexts and support for asynchronous questions while tasks are underway. Reports cited a 99.9% score on ARC-AGI-3, highlighting the model’s gains in reasoning and agentic performance. Access remains limited to selected programs, however, as OpenAI applies safeguards tied to a “Critical” cyber-capability threshold rather than making the model broadly available at launch.
