Samsung Plans Early Start for Yongin Fab to Meet AI Chip Demand

1 reports · First detected 2026-07-13 · Last active 2026-07-13

The rapid growth of generative artificial intelligence has sent global demand for high-performance memory and chips soaring, making semiconductor capacity a key battleground for technology giants. South Korean technology leader Samsung Electronics has worked closely with the government in recent years to advance a national semiconductor industrial park and reinforce its market leadership. The massive investment plan has major implications for the global technology supply chain and the future distribution of chip production.

To address the AI chip shortage, Samsung Electronics has revised its timetable and plans to begin operations at the first fab in the Yongin National Industrial Complex in 2029, earlier than previously scheduled. Samsung and the South Korean government expect combined investment in the Pyeongtaek and Yongin semiconductor clusters to reach 2,030 trillion won. The government is also providing extensive support, with infrastructure work scheduled to begin in the second half of 2026 and fab construction during 2027.
