TIME Serves Sponsored Pages Directly to AI Crawlers

1 reports · First detected 2026-08-06 · Last active 2026-08-06

Publishers have struggled to capture value as artificial-intelligence crawlers ingest articles for model training and real-time answers, often without generating referral traffic or licensing revenue. TIME is testing a different approach: treating AI agents and language models as an advertising audience. The strategy could create a machine-facing revenue stream beyond subscriptions, conventional display ads and content-licensing agreements.

TIME was found dynamically routing crawlers associated with ClaudeBot and OpenAI to Markdown pages designed for machines rather than ordinary readers. Those pages included sponsored brand questions and labels tied to Token-based billing, effectively placing paid content inside the information supplied to AI systems. The report did not disclose a launch date, participating advertisers, pricing or performance figures, leaving the commercial scale of the experiment unclear.
