Amazon and Microsoft Plan $94 Billion in AI Data Center Investment in Spain

Spain’s Aragon region has become a hub for Amazon and Microsoft’s AI data center expansion because of its relatively low renewable-energy costs, abundant land and expedited approvals under the General Interest Plan of Aragon, known as PIGA. The companies plan to invest about $94 billion combined, reflecting how technology giants are competing in the global AI market through energy and computing infrastructure.

As of July 2026, Amazon and Microsoft’s data center investments in Aragon totaled about $94 billion, with construction projects advancing into local towns and rural areas. The latest controversy centers on the compulsory acquisition of farmland under PIGA and whether the enormous capital spending will translate into long-term employment. Supporters argue that the projects will bolster the power grid, construction activity and the cloud industry supply chain.
