Investors Sue to Overturn TikTok Sale Approval
Former U.S. President Joe Biden signed legislation commonly known as the “TikTok law” in April 2024, requiring Chinese parent ByteDance to sell TikTok's U.S. operations within 12 months or face a ban. The dispute centers on national security, control of the algorithm and whether the transaction genuinely ends ByteDance's influence over the platform.
On March 5, 2026, the Public Integrity Project sued the U.S. government on behalf of two Meta and Alphabet investors, seeking to overturn approval of the deal. Under the joint venture announced on January 22, Silver Lake, Oracle and MGX each hold 15%, while ByteDance retains 19.9%. The transaction value was not disclosed, and the lawsuit alleges that ByteDance continues to license the recommendation algorithm.
