ChatGPT Integrations for Excel and Google Sheets Formally Launch With Natural-Language Controls
OpenAI is bringing generative AI beyond the chat interface and directly into Microsoft Excel and Google Sheets, challenging Microsoft Copilot and Google Gemini in the productivity-software market. Users can create budgets, KPI trackers and forecasts with natural-language instructions, as well as clean data and explain or update formulas. The tools lower the technical barrier to working with models spanning multiple worksheets, though critical calculations still require human review.
OpenAI released a beta version of ChatGPT for Excel on March 5, 2026, followed by a Google Sheets beta on April 22. On May 5, it announced that both GPT-5.5-powered products were formally available worldwide. They are offered on Free, Go, Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, Edu and K-12 plans. Usage is limited on Free and Go, while enterprise and education plans receive a free preview through June 2, after which usage will be charged against plan credits.
