Ex-OpenAI Researcher’s Hedge Fund Bets Big on AI Infrastructure and Bitcoin Miners
Former OpenAI researcher Leopold Aschenbrenner founded hedge fund Situational Awareness LP after leaving the company, betting that AI growth will be constrained by supplies of power, data centers and GPU computing capacity. The fund started with about $225 million and at one point grew to $5.52 billion, with CoreWeave and Bitcoin miners at the heart of its AI infrastructure strategy.
Situational Awareness LP’s latest 13F filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission shows that its assets under management have since climbed to $13.6 billion. In the second quarter of 2026, the fund exited some optical communications holdings and increased its exposure to computing infrastructure, including GPU cloud provider CoreWeave and Bitcoin miners such as Core Scientific and HIVE Digital that are pivoting to serve AI computing demand.
