SpaceX-xAI Merger Targets Space Data Centers and Lunar Base

3 reports · First detected 2026-04-11 · Last active 2026-05-07

The integration of SpaceX and xAI reflects Elon Musk’s push to bring rockets, satellite communications and AI computing under one organization. To overcome the power and cooling constraints of terrestrial data centers, SpaceX plans to use Starship to deploy data centers in space and link satellites by laser, creating a computing network described as a “single distributed brain” to support large-scale AI models.

SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell recently said the combined team plans to develop space-based computing infrastructure and establish an automated production base on the Moon within a decade. Musk announced on May 6 that xAI would cease operating independently, be renamed SpaceXAI and be integrated into SpaceX as an AI product. The transaction value and deployment costs have not been disclosed.
