Russian Ruble Stablecoin A7A5 Tops $110 Billion in Transactions Despite Western Sanctions
A7A5 is a ruble-denominated stablecoin linked to Russia’s A7 cross-border settlement network and designed to reduce sanctioned companies’ reliance on the dollar-based financial system. Even after the European Union sanctioned it in October 2025, blockchain technology continued to enable funds to move across borders. A7A5 has consequently become an important test case for sanctions enforcement and the rise of non-dollar stablecoins.
CertiK said in July 2026 that A7A5’s cumulative on-chain transaction volume had exceeded $110 billion, representing about 43% of the global non-dollar stablecoin market, while the number of wallets holding it had doubled within a year. A7A5 claims monthly volume of $20.5 billion, but TRM Labs estimates the figure at just $7.5 billion, revealing a substantial gap between its public claims and blockchain analysis.

Its development has implications for the effectiveness of sanctions and reflects Russia’s push to establish rules for cross-border payments using digital assets.
A7A5 executive Oleg Ogienko said on May 17, 2026, that demand could persist even if sanctions were lifted, supported by direct stablecoin swaps, regional crypto infrastructure and yields. CoinGecko data showed a market capitalization of about $500 million and a token yield of roughly 13.5%. A7A5 has also taken part in consultations on related legislation in Russia’s State Duma.
