DefiLlama Delayed App Launch Over Apple Store Phishing Clones
DefiLlama is a decentralized-finance data platform tracking metrics including total value locked, trading volume and protocol fees across thousands of projects and multiple blockchains. A mobile application extends that service to smartphone users, but the brand’s visibility also makes it a target for impersonators. Fake crypto apps are particularly dangerous because they can trick users into exposing wallet credentials or approving irreversible transactions that allow attackers to drain digital assets.
Pseudonymous founder 0xngmi said in August 2026 that DefiLlama postponed its planned iOS release until phishing apps using its name were removed from Apple’s App Store. The team created and funded a test wallet, then recorded a counterfeit app stealing the funds to provide direct evidence of malicious activity. Apple removed the software quickly after receiving the demonstration. DefiLlama’s official app was released on June 5, while the amount taken from the test wallet was not disclosed.
