Probe Finds 38 AI Nudification Apps on Apple and Google Stores Earned More Than $100 Million
AI nudification tools can turn ordinary photos of people into nude or pornographic images, often facilitating nonconsensual sexual imagery and deepfake abuse. Although the Apple App Store and Google Play explicitly restrict such content, the companies also control app reviews, search rankings and commissions, making the findings a key test of their ability to protect victims and govern AI.
The Tech Transparency Project published an investigation on April 15, 2026, identifying 18 such apps in the Apple App Store and 20 on Google Play, for a total of 38. AppMagic estimated that they had amassed 483 million downloads and more than $122 million in lifetime revenue, while the platforms’ search results and advertising systems even actively directed users to the tools.
