Ring Adds TAKE Encryption to Limit Police Access, Preserve AI Search

Amazon-owned Ring has faced sustained scrutiny over how footage from its doorbells and security cameras can be accessed by the company and shared with law enforcement. Its new TAKE encryption architecture is designed to narrow that access by default, addressing privacy concerns around sensitive video recorded inside and around customers’ homes while retaining the cloud-based features that underpin Ring’s consumer security products.

Ring said TAKE will begin rolling out in September and will be introduced gradually for all users. Once enabled, the system will limit the surveillance footage Ring can provide to police and other authorities. The company said the encryption will not disable AI-powered video search or smart alerts that identify people and objects, allowing those services to continue without restoring broader access to customers’ recordings.
