Instant Payments Help Treasurers Unlock Working Capital

1 reports · First detected 2026-08-21 · Last active 2026-08-21

Corporate treasury teams have traditionally funded payments ahead of settlement because batch processing and overnight clearing create a gap between payment initiation and final delivery. Instant-payment rails narrow that window by moving money and completing settlement almost simultaneously. That allows companies to retain cash longer without renegotiating supplier terms, improving working-capital efficiency, intraday liquidity and the potential return on short-term balances.

The latest report says treasurers can use instant payments to release funds closer to the actual due time instead of prefunding obligations hours or days earlier. The shift effectively turns payment timing into a liquidity-management lever while preserving agreed payment terms. The report did not identify a specific company or payment operator, and disclosed no transaction value, implementation date or quantified savings, leaving the financial benefit dependent on each company’s payment volume and cash-management practices.

Real-Time Payments Make Always-On Treasury Essential for Banks and Companies2026-07-08 · 1 reports · similarity 0.85

The Clearing House launched RTP in the United States in 2017, and real-time settlement has gradually replaced batch processing constrained by banking hours. The Federal Reserve followed with the launch of FedNow on July 20, 2023. With payments operating around the clock, banks and companies that continue to manage payments, cash positions and working capital separately will struggle to control liquidity and risk in real time.

Reports published in July 2026 said always-on treasury had become an essential operational capability for banks. Citizens’ latest payments trends survey covered more than 300 corporate executives and found that 97% of respondents using real-time payments chose RTP. The Clearing House also said RTP processes 98% of all real-time interbank payments in the United States, while its payment systems collectively clear more than $2 trillion each business day.
