Google DeepMind CEO Predicts AGI Around 2030

Artificial general intelligence, or AGI, refers to AI capable of understanding, reasoning and performing tasks across domains much like humans. Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis believes agentic AI with autonomous planning capabilities is reshaping workflows and could eventually accelerate drug development, disease treatment and major scientific breakthroughs. Its progress will therefore have significant implications for industry and societal governance.

Speaking during Google I/O in May 2025, Hassabis said humanity had reached the “foothills of the singularity” and predicted AGI could arrive in about five years, around 2030. He warned that society has little time to prepare and said governments and businesses must begin addressing risks including workforce disruption, safety regulation and loss of control over the technology.
