pxpipe is an open-source proxy tool developed to reduce text-token costs for the Anthropic Claude API. It converts system prompts, code and conversation histories into PNG files that the model processes visually, taking advantage of differences in visual-token pricing to lower long-context costs. The approach is particularly relevant to applications that frequently send large amounts of background material.

The latest testing found that pxpipe could cut bills by about 60% by converting content into images and using OCR to pass it to what the report called Fable 5. No exact cost figures or publication date were disclosed. The developer cautioned that the method is a form of lossy compression and is unsuitable for data such as UUIDs and API keys, which must be reproduced character for character and could be misread.
