DeepMind CEO Urges US to Create Independent Frontier AI Standards Body
As artificial general intelligence advances rapidly, frontier AI models are drawing scrutiny over national security risks ranging from cyberattacks to biological weapons. Most countries currently rely on voluntary assessments, which offer limited safeguards against misuse. Establishing enforceable standards that can be updated in real time has therefore become an urgent priority. The proposal could reshape global competition in the technology industry and affect future geopolitical and national security defenses.
Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis wrote in mid-July 2026 calling for a US-led, independent “frontier AI standards body” modeled on the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority, or FINRA. Under his proposal, companies would voluntarily submit safety tests 30 days before releasing a new model. Industry leaders including Microsoft and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman have reposted the proposal in support.
