NVIDIA Launches Vera Rubin Space-1 Computing Platform, Targets Orbital AI Market
Satellites generate vast amounts of imagery and sensor data every day, but sending all of it back to Earth for analysis is constrained by bandwidth and transmission delays. NVIDIA is therefore moving data center-grade AI inference into orbit, allowing satellites to process data locally and make real-time decisions. However, the lack of convective cooling in space means systems must also contend with radiation, power consumption and size—key factors in whether orbital data centers can become commercially viable.
NVIDIA unveiled its Space-1 Vera Rubin module at GTC on March 16, 2026, saying a single GPU can deliver up to 25 times the space-based AI computing performance of an H100. IGX Thor and Jetson Orin will support mission-critical applications and edge computing on small satellites, respectively. Six companies, including Aetherflux and Axiom Space, have adopted the platforms. NVIDIA has yet to announce Space-1’s price or launch date.
