Trust Overtakes Speed as Payments’ Competitive Edge
Digital payments providers have long competed on transaction speed, instant settlement and network reach. As banks, fintechs and digital wallets connect across borders, however, customers increasingly want assurance that funds will arrive safely, payment status will remain visible and failures can be resolved. Visa says trust is becoming the defining currency of the instant economy, putting reliability, security and governance on equal footing with raw processing speed.
Jim Filice, Visa’s head of money movement for North America, said on Feb. 10, 2026, that Visa Direct serves more than 195 countries and reaches about 12 billion card, account and wallet endpoints in over 150 currencies. The network can connect to roughly 99% of U.S. accounts. Visa disclosed no transaction value, but highlighted real-time fraud monitoring, jurisdiction-specific compliance controls and payment transparency as key competitive priorities.
