Financial institutions across Asia-Pacific are accelerating the use of artificial intelligence in customer screening and compliance decisions, raising concerns over whether regulators and risk teams can understand how models reach their conclusions. The Monetary Authority of Singapore and other regional watchdogs have introduced AI risk-management guidance as the industry seeks stronger standards for fairness, accountability, transparency and governance.

The history behind this eventAI Compliance Eclipses Cybersecurity as Wealth Firms’ Top Regulatory Risk
Artificial intelligence has shifted from an efficiency tool for investment research and client service to a central governance issue for wealth managers. Hallucinations, biased outputs, privacy breaches and inadequate recordkeeping can affect investment recommendations and fiduciary obligations, prompting regulators to examine whether firms can document AI use, trace data sources and preserve meaningful human oversight.
The latest industry survey found that 85% of compliance professionals ranked AI compliance as their leading regulatory challenge, more than double the 37% citing cybersecurity risk. More than four in five institutions have adopted policies governing AI use, but the establishment of formal, cross-functional AI governance committees continues to lag, exposing a gap between written rules and accountable, auditable oversight.
