United Texas Bank Wins Approval to Become Nationally Chartered Bank, Challenging Wall Street's Crypto Dominance
Dallas-based United Texas Bank, founded more than 40 years ago, has increasingly focused on serving offshore banks, over-the-counter trading firms and large cryptocurrency exchanges, filling a gap for digital-asset companies that struggle to obtain U.S. banking services. Its conversion to a national bank charter will give it direct access to Federal Reserve payment systems while retaining FDIC deposit insurance, providing the regulatory foundation to compete with major Wall Street banks.
The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency conditionally approved United Texas Bank's conversion on May 15, 2026. The bank announced on May 27 that it had satisfied both conditions, with the conversion formally taking effect on June 12. It currently processes about $10 billion in U.S. dollar transactions for the crypto industry each month, or more than $120 billion annually, and uses its AI-powered UTB Atomic real-time settlement network to strengthen liquidity and compliance controls.
