US States Step Up Antitrust Scrutiny of Big Tech’s AI Edge

U.S. state attorneys general are taking a more prominent role in nationwide antitrust enforcement, with Big Tech’s advantages in artificial intelligence emerging as a key concern. Regulators are examining whether control over data, cloud infrastructure and capital allows dominant technology platforms to extend existing market power into AI, potentially raising barriers for startups and concentrating the next generation of digital products and services among a small group of companies.

Tennessee’s attorney general said recently that uncertainty over how AI will reshape competition should not justify delaying action against monopolistic conduct. As of Aug. 13, 2026, state authorities had not announced a formal start date for a coordinated investigation, identified specific corporate targets or disclosed any monetary amount tied to the scrutiny. The comments nevertheless signal that states are prepared to assess competitive harm before the AI market’s structure becomes firmly established.
