ECB Explores Linking TIPS With Brazil’s Pix

The European Central Bank is assessing whether the Eurosystem’s TARGET Instant Payment Settlement service, known as TIPS, could be connected with Brazil’s Pix platform. A link could speed up payments between the euro area and Brazil, reduce reliance on lengthy correspondent-banking chains and provide a significant test of how domestic instant-payment networks can work together across borders.

The initiative remains at the feasibility stage, and the ECB has not announced a launch date, investment amount, technical model or pricing terms. Any implementation would need to address regulatory compliance, foreign-exchange conversion, liquidity management and interoperability between the two systems. The review therefore signals interest in deeper cross-border payment cooperation, rather than a confirmed agreement to connect TIPS and Pix.

Pix, launched by Banco Central do Brasil in November 2020, lets individuals, companies and public bodies move money within seconds around the clock. The state-run network has become Brazil’s dominant payment rail, widening access to digital finance and challenging card-based models. Transactions totaled about $7 trillion in 2025, underscoring why the system is viewed as a template for financial inclusion and lower-cost public payment infrastructure across Latin America and other emerging markets.

Banco Central do Brasil said in the second Pix Management Report, released on Aug. 10, 2026, that it was increasingly confident about linking Pix directly with instant-payment platforms abroad. By the end of the first half, the central bank had signed information-sharing agreements with 65 foreign counterparts. It said interoperability could cut cross-border fees, speed settlement, broaden access and improve transparency. The authority did not disclose a project budget, name initial partner countries or set a launch date.
