Musk's $500 Million in SpaceX Loans Sparks Pre-IPO Governance Concerns
SpaceX is a privately held aerospace company led by Chief Executive Elon Musk, and its insider lending has historically faced limited public scrutiny. But as the company prepares for what could be the largest IPO on record, its founder's control over operations and access to preferential financing have made conflicts of interest, board oversight and investor protection key governance issues ahead of a listing.
The New York Times reported on April 24, 2026, that Musk had borrowed about $500 million in total from SpaceX over three years, at floating interest rates ranging from less than 1% to nearly 3%—well below typical bank terms. Legal experts criticized the transactions for lacking independent oversight. If SpaceX lists in the summer of 2026, similar loans to senior executives would face tighter regulatory restrictions.
