Microsoft and Nvidia Launch AI for Nuclear to Speed Reactor Approvals
The expansion of AI data centers is driving up electricity demand, reviving nuclear power as a baseload option because it can provide stable, low-carbon electricity without weather-related intermittency. The U.S. Energy Information Administration estimates nationwide electricity consumption will rise from 4,195 TWh in 2025 to 4,372 TWh in 2027. Nuclear projects have long been constrained by approval and engineering delays, making automated design, documentation and risk simulation critical to bringing new power online in time.
Microsoft and Nvidia launched AI for Nuclear on March 25, 2026, combining generative AI with Digital Twins to automate nuclear-plant design, documentation, simulation and construction processes. Aalo Atomics cut approval time by 92% after adopting the system and estimates annual savings of $80 million. Separately, the White House ordered the Nuclear Regulatory Commission in May 2025 to reduce reviews for new reactors to no more than 18 months and complete license-extension reviews within one year.
