Kraken Launches Bitcoin and Ether Options to Expand Derivatives Business
Crypto exchange Kraken recently launched bitcoin and ether options, marking a new step toward unlocking the multibillion-dollar global crypto derivatives market. Unlike in traditional finance, existing crypto options products are largely designed for major institutions and require physical settlement. Complex custody arrangements have deterred retail traders and other professional investors. Kraken aims to attract more capital by simplifying the options structure and lowering barriers to entry.
Kraken acquired Bitnomial for as much as $550 million in May 2026 to secure regulatory authorization. It then launched its first U.S. dollar-settled European-style bitcoin and ether options on Kraken Pro on July 17, 2026. The products are initially available to selected international clients through a request-for-quote model. Kraken plans to expand the service to Europe in the second half of 2026 to accelerate the opening of the derivatives market.
