Checkout Becomes Commerce’s Most Valuable Moment
E-commerce checkout has evolved from the final step in collecting payment into a critical stage that shapes conversion rates and customer relationships. DECTA UK CEO Scott Dawson said merchants must integrate digital wallets, buy now, pay later (BNPL), subscriptions and currency-conversion tools. Nearly 70% of shopping carts are abandoned before checkout, underscoring how speed, payment choice and fee transparency directly affect revenue.
The Fintech Times published the analysis on April 22, 2026. It found that 77% of UK consumers expect payments to be nearly instantaneous, 58% want one-click checkout and 75% say access to their preferred payment method can help complete a purchase. The UK BNPL market grew from virtually zero in 2017 to more than £13 billion in 2024. New Financial Conduct Authority rules taking effect in July 2026 will require providers to disclose terms upfront and conduct affordability checks.
