Ukraine Busts Kyiv Crypto Drainer Ring Moving $1 Million a Month

1 reports · First detected 2026-09-03 · Last active 2026-09-03

Crypto drainers often masquerade as investment services or test transactions, tricking users into approving malicious wallet permissions that allow assets to be transferred without surrendering seed phrases. Ukrainian law enforcement said the Kyiv-based operation targeted victims across more than 20 countries, underscoring how wallet theft has evolved into an organized, cross-border business supported by deceptive platforms and coordinated money flows.

Ukrainian authorities recently dismantled the fake-investment platform ring after investigators found it used purported test trades to secure wallet approvals and steal cryptocurrency. Officials have identified 62 victims, while the group allegedly moved as much as $1 million a month at the height of its activity. Authorities have not disclosed the precise date of the operation or the aggregate value of assets stolen.

The suspect is accused of taking part in a transnational cybercrime group that used malware to steal data from individuals and businesses in the United States and Europe before extorting the victims, causing more than $100 million in losses. The U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation placed the suspect on its wanted list. The case highlights how cryptocurrency and real estate can be used for cross-border money laundering and poses a test for international law-enforcement cooperation.

Ukraine’s National Police said on April 16, 2026, that the suspect had been arrested in Uzhhorod, Zakarpattia region, where the individual had been hiding under a false identity.
