Orange Brings Wero Payments to Sosh Bills in French First

Wero, developed by the bank-backed European Payments Initiative, launched in 2024 with peer-to-peer instant transfers in France, Germany and Belgium. Its expansion into recurring consumer bills marks a significant test of whether a homegrown European payment network can move beyond money transfers and gain commercial scale, while reducing the region’s reliance on international card networks such as Visa and Mastercard.

Orange said on Sept. 2, 2026, that it had become the first merchant in France to let customers pay subscription bills with Wero. The service allows Sosh customers to pay directly through their banking app and is initially limited to BNP Paribas users, with more French banks due to join in the second half of 2026. Wero has nearly 40 million users in France and more than 58 million across Europe.
