DeFi Outperforms Bitcoin as Market Quietly Re-Rates Sector, Bitwise Says
Decentralized finance tokens have often been viewed as risky and highly volatile crypto assets that tend to fall more sharply than Bitcoin during market downturns. But traditional financial institutions are gradually adopting DeFi protocols, while leading applications such as Aave generated about $900 million in revenue over the past year. The market is reassessing DeFi's fundamental value and token economics, significantly increasing the sector's importance and resilience.
Crypto index fund issuer Bitwise said in a July 2026 report that Bitcoin plunged about 22% in June, while the Bitwise DeFi Index fell only about 4%, showing unusual resilience. Although DeFi's total value locked, or TVL, declined to about $70 billion at the end of June, the relative performance suggests capital may be quietly re-rating and flowing into DeFi protocols that generate cash flow.
