Bitcoin Core Discloses First Memory-Safety Flaw, Leaving 43% of Nodes Exposed
Bitcoin Core is the most widely used node software on the Bitcoin network and validates blocks and transactions. CVE-2024-52911 is the project’s first disclosed memory-safety vulnerability. A malicious miner could craft a special block that causes nodes to crash or even allows remote code execution, threatening network stability and the security of node operations.
Bitcoin Core included a fix in version 29.0, released in April 2025, but about 43% of nodes were still running unpatched versions when the vulnerability was disclosed. Exploitation requires a miner to produce a specially crafted block, making an attack difficult. Nodes that have not been upgraded nevertheless face the potential risk of service disruption or system takeover.

Bitcoin Core, one of the most widely used software implementations for operating Bitcoin nodes, underpins transaction and block verification across the network. Version 32.0 is designed to improve performance and fee estimation without changing Bitcoin’s consensus rules, while addressing security risks in wallet commands and server components that could affect node operators.
The Bitcoin Core development team has released the first candidate build of version 32.0, moving the upgrade into final testing ahead of a planned October 10 launch. The release accelerates block validation, revises fee-estimation behavior and patches several vulnerabilities, including flaws involving wallet command execution and memory exhaustion in the software’s web server.
