Apple Opens Automotive MapKit as Ford Plans 2027 Rollout

Apple has traditionally delivered Apple Maps to vehicle displays through CarPlay, which relies on a connected iPhone. MapKit for Automotive marks a broader push into native infotainment systems, allowing automakers to embed Apple’s mapping and navigation technology directly in their vehicles. The approach could give carmakers more control over the in-cabin experience while providing richer location data for navigation and advanced driver-assistance features.

Apple recently unveiled the MapKit for Automotive software development kit, with Ford expected to become the first automaker to deploy the technology in 2027. Drivers will be able to access built-in Apple Maps without connecting an iPhone. Ford also plans to make mapping data available to its Latitude AI unit as the team develops the next generation of BlueCruise, the automaker’s hands-free highway driving-assistance system.
