Samsung Expands Pyeongtaek P5 Plant, Orders Up to 70 Systems for HBM4 and AI Demand

Samsung Electronics is expanding P5, the fifth plant at its Pyeongtaek campus in South Korea, with a focus on 1c-process DRAM and HBM4. As Nvidia's next-generation Rubin GPUs drive demand for high-bandwidth memory, the expansion of advanced-process capacity will affect Samsung's ability to strengthen its position in the AI semiconductor supply chain and narrow the gap with its main rivals.

Samsung recently ordered up to about 70 lithography systems from ASML and Canon for the first-phase production line at Pyeongtaek P5, including about 20 EUV systems. The purchase price has not been disclosed. The equipment is expected to enter production in 2027, increasing 1c DRAM and HBM4 capacity to meet demand from AI chips such as Nvidia's Rubin GPUs.
