Bank of America Targets $250 Billion for U.S. AI Infrastructure
The generative-AI boom is turning data centers into an infrastructure financing challenge, with new computing capacity requiring power generation, grids, storage, water systems and critical minerals. Bank of America sees an opportunity to channel global savings into long-dated U.S. assets as developers race to meet demand. The scale also raises questions about whether AI-related spending can earn durable returns and whether financing energy-intensive projects can be reconciled with the bank’s net-zero and sustainable-finance commitments.
Bank of America announced its Critical Infrastructure Finance Initiative on Aug. 12, 2026, aiming to mobilize $250 billion over the following year for U.S. data centers, energy, manufacturing, water and transportation infrastructure. Karen Fang, the bank’s global head of infrastructure and sustainable finance, said funding could span equity, debt, loans and hybrid structures and draw international capital. The figure is a mobilization target rather than a single direct lending commitment, placing BofA alongside other Wall Street firms courting the AI buildout.
