NVIDIA, SPAN Bring Mini AI Data Centers to Homes
The AI boom is straining power grids as conventional data centers wait years for interconnections, substations and construction. San Francisco-based smart-energy startup SPAN is pitching XFRA as a distributed alternative, pooling unused electrical capacity at homes and small commercial properties to serve AI inference workloads. NVIDIA is supplying enterprise-grade Blackwell GPUs, while SPAN’s smart panel and battery manage household demand, grid resilience and compute use. The model could also lower homeowners’ utility costs or provide host compensation, although final commercial terms have not been disclosed.
SPAN unveiled XFRA on April 13, 2026, naming NVIDIA and homebuilder PulteGroup among its launch partners. Each liquid-cooled node is designed around 16 NVIDIA RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell Server Edition GPUs. SPAN says 8,000 nodes could match a 100-megawatt centralized data center, deploy six times faster and cost one-fifth as much. A 100-home U.S. proof of concept is planned for 2026, followed by broader expansion in 2027; the company is targeting 80,000 nodes and more than 1 gigawatt of distributed capacity. Reports put the homeowner plan at about $150 a month in exchange for electricity and internet support, but SPAN says compensation details remain under development.
