Trump Crypto Ventures Left Investors $4.7 Billion Underwater, Public Citizen Says

5 reports · First detected 2026-08-28 · Last active 2026-08-31

Donald Trump and his family have expanded into digital assets since 2022 through NFT trading cards, meme coins and governance tokens tied to decentralized-finance ventures. Public Citizen, a nonprofit consumer advocacy group, says the projects transferred wealth to issuers and a small group of early buyers while exposing retail investors to sharp price declines, intensifying scrutiny of potential conflicts between Trump’s political influence and his family’s crypto interests.

Investors are at least $4.7 billion underwater across the Trump-linked ventures launched since 2022, according to Public Citizen’s latest report, while Trump and his family made an estimated $1.4 billion. The TRUMP meme coin accounted for the largest share, with about $3.2 billion in investor losses and much of the proceeds flowing to a limited number of early buyers. Other losses were linked to NFT trading cards and governance tokens, the group said.

Trump’s Official Memecoin Holders Lose More Than $3.8 Billion2026-07-06 · 2 reports · similarity 0.86

Trump launched his official TRUMP memecoin on January 17, 2025, three days before his second inauguration. Such tokens have little practical utility and rely heavily on celebrity exposure for their value. A sitting US president issuing one under his personal brand has also raised concerns over investment risks, conflicts of interest and the disparity in returns between retail investors and large early holders.

A recent report from blockchain analytics firm Nansen showed that, as of the end of June 2026, 988,905 of roughly 1.48 million buyer wallets — about two-thirds — were in the red, with combined losses of $3.81 billion. Fewer than 500,000 profitable holders earned a combined $4 billion, highlighting a divide in which a small group of early buyers reaped outsized gains while most retail investors absorbed losses as the token’s price fell.

The Trump family launched World Liberty Financial in September 2024 and issued the $TRUMP meme coin in January 2025. After returning to the White House, Trump took the lead in shaping cryptocurrency policy while his private businesses also benefited, raising concerns about conflicts between his presidential powers and commercial interests.

An annual financial disclosure released by the U.S. Office of Government Ethics on June 30, 2026, showed that Trump earned more than $1.4 billion from crypto-related ventures in 2025, including about $635 million from $TRUMP and about $799 million from World Liberty Financial. Nansen data through the end of June showed that nearly 990,000 wallets had lost a combined $3.81 billion, while Bitcoin was down about 50% from its all-time high.
