Trump Backs Ethics Provision as Crypto Bill Nears Senate Vote
The Digital Asset Market Clarity Act would establish the first comprehensive federal framework for U.S. crypto markets and divide oversight between the Securities and Exchange Commission and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission. Its ethics section has become pivotal because Senate Democrats want limits on crypto profits by presidents, vice presidents, lawmakers and other federal officials while in office. The dispute intensified after a filing with the Office of Government Ethics showed Trump earned more than $1.4 billion from family crypto ventures in 2025.
An industry source told The Block on July 20 that Trump had agreed to ethics language after months of talks, following a July 16 meeting with Republican Senators Cynthia Lummis and Bernie Moreno and White House crypto adviser Patrick Witt. Democrats had not yet seen the text, and the White House had not confirmed the agreement. Draft language is expected within days, potentially clearing the way for a full Senate vote before its first-week-of-August recess; passage would send the revised bill back to the House before Trump could sign it.
