Surging AI Power Demand Challenges Microsoft’s 2030 Goal for 100% Renewable Energy

Microsoft had planned to cover all electricity used across its global operations with renewable-energy purchases by 2030, a key part of its carbon-reduction commitments. However, generative AI has driven rapid expansion of Azure cloud services and data centers, pushing electricity demand beyond earlier projections and straining renewable-energy supplies, grid capacity and emissions controls.

In response to soaring power consumption from AI infrastructure, Microsoft is assessing whether to delay or revise its goal of reaching 100% renewable energy by 2030 and may even abandon the original timetable. The company has not stopped procuring low-carbon electricity. It has signed supply agreements with energy providers for a combined 1.2 GW of additional carbon-free power to support data centers and AI computing demand.
